Operation is Finally Over
Posted on November 01 2024
In the past week or two, it has been an extremely stressful for me and my handsome young man over his bilateral tonsillectomy. It caused me stomach problems like acid burns and sleepless nights because he was so petrified of it. He even told me that he refused to go to the hospital for the operation after all the planning I had put in place with staff at Aintree Hospital, involving his consultant and his secretary, Pre op assessment sister, Day ward staff, Theatre staff, Anaesthetist, Learning Disability Nurse, Recovery Staff and Pharmacist.
Anyway, the operation went ahead this Wednesday smoothly due to the military plan that I put in place. He was very well looked after and everyone checked on him regularly including his consultant and anaesthetist until he was discharged home. My husband and I were allowed to stay with him throughout the process except when he was inside the theatre having the surgery. He was so happy to see me when he woke up from the surgery in Recovery room and the nurse let me looked after him as he wouldn't let anyone get near him. This is because he was confused by the anaesthetic drugs and petrified.
He was discharged earlier than expected because of his phobias and fears of hospitals and also staff felt he recovered quicker at home.
He had two terrible nights and yesterday he was in so much pain that his hands couldn't stop shaking and sweating profusely despite paracetamol and Ibuprofen. I gave him some codeine which knocked him out and made him feel nauseous all day, so much so that he couldn't eat or drink. Therefore I ended up spoon feeding him drinks and food with a teaspoon so to avoid the gag reflux. With this method, he managed to eat and drink a bit.
This afternoon, he's better and I guess the heat pad and high grade New Zealand Manuka honey help to reduce the swelling in the wound areas, half the size than yesterday. However, I still have to spoon-feed him today.
I feel so relieved that my cheeky young man is on the road to recovery and just praying no complications as this can be a high risk operation. This is because the whole of his throat has been cut due the tonsils were the same size as a cherry! Luckily his consultant prescribed antibiotics to prevent any infection. A massive thank to all staff at Aintree hospital for being so accommodating and flexible with Alessio.
I can't wait to see his lovely smile again!!!
