On Friday 31st July I was scrolling through Facebook, Zero Waste - Liverpool put out a notice saying they have spare bags of food available at St. Hilda's Church that evening. I messaged them and to my surprise they reserved me a bag.
I was really excited to go as I have not been for 1.5 years. Yes I used to go every week to get free expired food when I struggled to feed my family caused by the 5 years legal battle against Kate McIver Skin. Real hard times back in 2023 to early 2025, as I was close to bankruptcy.
Therefore I felt a bit nostalgic when I got to the queue at 9.50pm, as I don't need to rely on Zero Waste - Liverpool or any social supermarkets nowadays. I remember vividly those gone by days where I queued in the rain and cold for free food and on occasions, I was sick but I still waited because I needed the food so badly.
Fast forward, I have gone back to buy free range and organic food like I used to and eating very well, as I managed to turn things around.
The bag is so heavy that it required to be carried in a trolley. Wow, loads of food so we ate some that night, some were put into the freezer and the rest were eaten yesterday. Also I gave some cakes from Sainsbury's and a pizza to a friend and she was so happy with them.
There was no expiry date before the fridge revolution. We ate everything and are still here in good health.
I don't like waste and always try to recycle or reuse things, as there are so many people are starving in the world. It's not about having money or not as I have always lived a humble life!
Here's my stirred fried noodles including the rockets to feed the whole family and the stunning flowers are from Tesco.
Without Zero Waste - Liverpool, many families including mine would go hungry, therefore I am going to give the volunteers a gift each for this Christmas as they well deserved a special treat!
