After a Friday from hell yesterday — my empty property sale fell through again, and it's been on the market since last March — I woke up this morning and had a little cry. Then I pulled myself out of bed and tried to carry on as usual.
.
Feeling sorry for myself, I needed something to cheer me up, so I went to the Chinese supermarket in town and bought my favourite chestnut cake.
.
I also bought paper money, clothes, joss sticks, chicken, belly pork, lettuce, sweets and fruit — offerings for the 8 members of my family who've passed away, including my parents, godparents, grandma, sister and sister-in-law. This is to pay respect to them and other restless souls.
.
In Chinese culture, the Hungry Ghost Festival started two days ago, when the gates of the underworld open and restless spirits and ancestors walk the earth. People burn paper money and offer food to family members who are no longer with us. So I'll be busy cooking tonight to get everything ready for 10pm.
.
After a hard day of shopping, I treated myself to a big piece of that delicious cake with a hot chocolate while watching Johnny English, and felt so much better afterwards.
.
Here's hoping for a better day tomorrow — I'll be at Croxteth Hall with my pop-up shop. 💛
